Green
seminar for catering and entertainment businesses in Wan Chai
The Wan
Chai District Council, the Environmental Protection Department
(EPD) and the Wan Chai District Office will tomorrow (January
26) jointly organise a seminar to promote the environmental
awareness among the catering and entertainment businesses,
property management companies and residents in Wan Chai.
There are about 1 500 restaurants, pubs and karaoke bars in
Wan Chai, which is the highest number compared with other
districts.
"The
seminar aims to enhance communication and partnership among
the relevant parties to combat environmental problems arising
from the catering and entertainment businesses in the district
in a more effective way," a spokesman for the EPD said.
"It
will also introduce to the operators of these businesses the
updated environmental technology."
The EPD
has formed partnerships with the restaurant, vehicle repair
and construction industries as well as property management
companies to encourage operators to avoid creating pollution
and to adopt cleaner technologies.
Apart
from providing restaurant operators with technical advice,
assistance and environmental education under the partnership
programme, the EPD also solicits the support of various District
Councils and community leaders in promoting compliance by
the catering and entertainment businesses.
During
the seminar, representatives from the Hong Kong Productivity
Council will give talks on common pollution arising from restaurants
and entertainment premises, such as cooking fume emission,
noise nuisance and wastewater discharge, and advise on pollution
prevention measures.
In addition
to the talks, there will be environmental games, drama and
display of information panels and pollution prevention models
to disseminate environmental messages to the participants.
The seminar
will be held between 2 pm and 5 pm at Room 301 of the Hong
Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The Opening Ceremony
will start at 2.30 pm.
Among
the officiating guests will be the Deputy Secretary for the
Environment and Food, Mr Donald Tong; the Assistant Director
of Environmental Protection (Local Control), Dr Michael Chiu;
the Chairman of the Wan Chai District Council's Environmental
Cleansing and Food Hygiene Working Group, Mrs Alice Pong;
and the Chairman of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants
and Related Trades, Mr David Ng.
