Petrol filling stations with vapour recovery system to display eye-catching certificate
Petrol filling stations with Phase II vapour recovery systems were now required to display a new eye-catching certificate for easy identification, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department said today (December 24).
Under the Air Pollution Control (Petrol Filling Stations) (Vapour Recovery) Regulation, petrol filling stations are required to install vapour recovery system for their petrol dispensing devices and a three-year grace period from March 31, 2005, is given to existing stations to be retrofitted with the system.
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), with petrol vapour being one of the more reactive species, are a major pollutant giving rise to smog pollution problems.
Petrol filling stations with the vapour recovery system would have their VOC emissions reduced by 95% during refuelling.
"By requiring the stations to display the poster-sized certificate at a conspicuous location, these stations can be easily identified. We encourage drivers to look for these stations for refuelling," the spokesman said.
"Cutting down emission of air pollutants including petrol vapour will help improve air quality. Participation by every individual in the community is needed. Every small step counts," he said.
Starting from this month (December), new petrol stations or existing stations receiving a test or re-test of the vapour recovery system are issued with A1-sized certificates for easy identification by drivers.
Details of the issuance of the certificate and a list of petrol filling stations with the vapour recovery system have been uploaded onto the department's homepage at http://www.epd.gov.hk for public viewing.
