A sludge treatment facility proposed
The Environmental Protection Department proposes to build a sludge treatment facility of a capacity of 2,000 tonnes per day at Tsang Tsui near Nim Wan, Tuen Mun with a view to solving the sewage sludge disposal problem.
An EPD spokesman said that the project profile was submitted today (August 20) for the application of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study brief under the EIA Ordinance.
He said Hong Kong produced about 900 tonnes of sewage sludge everyday. Based on the present sludge production rates, the quantity would increase to more than 1,500 tonnes every day after the commissioning of Harbour Area Treatment Scheme Stage 2A and upgrading works of other sewage treatment works by 2014.
"The disposal of such vast quantity of sludge to landfills is not sustainable, as it would accelerate the exhaustion of landfill space and affect the landfill stability. It is therefore necessary to develop a dedicated sludge treatment facility," the spokesman said.
"The proposed treatment facility will adopt the state-of-the-art incineration technology and will be designed to meet the most stringent emission standards and ensure full compliance of all prevailing environmental standards," he added.
The EIA study for the project is expected to commence in October this year.
