The award presentation ceremony of the "Source Separation of Waste – Model Family Competition 2008" was held today (January 10) at Chiang Chen Studio Theatre in Hong Kong Polytechnic University. The competition was jointly organised by the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) and "Take me Home".

The competition was to encourage families territory-wide to share, through photos and text, their methods and experience in source separation of waste. It also commended outstanding participating families and housing estates, schools and building management companies that gave assistance in promoting the event, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, said at the ceremony.

The judging panel had shortlisted six pioneer families from about 1,400 entries in the competition. The panellists visited the pioneer families to decide the winners of various awards.

One thousand housing estates, with 53% of the total population in Hong Kong, have participated in the Source Separation of Waste (SSW) Programme since its territory-wide launch in January 2005. The Government had targeted to have 80% of Hong Kong’s total population able to participate in the SSW Programme in their own housing estates by 2010.

"The Government has amended the subsidiary regulation of the Buildings Ordinance to provide better supporting facilities for SSW. From December 2008, all residential premises of newly submitted building plans have to provide a refuse storage and material recovery chamber on each floor for residents to separate waste at the source," Mr Yau said.

The Environmental Campaign Committee has also developed the newly designed three-coloured recycling bins. They will be placed in more than 300 additional recycling points in public places to provide more convenience to the public and increase the quantity of recycling materials.

The EPD will organise regular joint efforts with residential estates and building management companies to strengthen promotion to and education of the residents, Mr Yau said.

"Through activities such as the Model Family Competition, we hope to raise public interest in participation and help people develop the habit of separating waste at the source and reducing waste," he said.
