Appendix 3.5
Specification
for wetland planting
Herbaceous
plants (including Phragmites spp.)
Herbaceous plants for the
marshland mitigation area and reedbed planting shall how the following
characteristics:
·
Well
developed vigorous shoots and root system;
·
height
above soil level not less than that stated in Table 5.2 above;
·
well
developed bulbs, corms, rhizomes or tubers.
Plants will be grown in open
ground and then placed in a rigid or semi-rigid container and left to grow in
containers for not less than 3 months before being delivered to site.
Containers will not be less than 125 mm in diameter and 150 mm deep.
Aquatic plants (i.e. floating
plants or those which must be grown with their roots in water) will be
transported to site by a method to be proposed by the contractor and agreed
with the Resident Engineer or his representative prior to any transportation
being undertaken.
Shrubs
Shrubs shall have the following
characteristics:
·
bush
with at least three one-year old vigourous stems arising at or near the base;
·
well
developed, vigourous root system;
·
height
above soil level not less than 300 mm.;
·
grown
and supplied in a container at least 100 mm in diameter and 125 mm deep.
Trees
Trees shall have the following
characteristics:
·
less
than 3 years old;
·
single
central stem well furnished with side branches according to species;
·
well
developed vigorous root system;
·
height
above soil of between 900 mm and 2000 mm;
·
grown
in a container at least 75 mm diameter and 150 mm deep.
Bamboos
Bamboos shall have the
following characteristics:
·
well
developed vigorous root system;
·
at
least one stem not less than 900 mm above soil level;
·
rootball
of at least 200 mm diameter and 200 mm deep.
Grass
seed / hydroseeding
Grass seed shall be supplied
true to species and the total
content of other species (weeds and other grasses) shall not exceed 1%
by mass. The origin of the seed and the name of the supplier shall be stated on
the containers.
The following particulars of
hydroseeding methods shall be submitted to the Engineers Representative for
approval by the project ecologist prior to the commencement of hydroseeding:
·
rate
of application of seed;
·
type
and rate of application of fertiliser, mulch and soil binder;
·
type
and colour of dye;
·
type
of protective fabric material;
·
details
of the hydroseeding equipment to be used.
General
Prior to the commencement of
planting works the contractor is required to submit for approval a method
statement and planting plan demonstrating how planting works will be
implemented. No planting works will take place on site prior to approval of the
method statement.
The contractor shall provide
timely advice to permit the plant stock to be examined in the nursery for
inspection and approval prior to any material being moved to site. The
contractor will provide a set of photographs of each species which will form a
reference standard.
Plant species on the list will
not be substituted without approval of the Resident Engineer on the advice of
the project ecologist. In this respect it should be noted that substitutions
are unlikely to be accepted and it is the responsibility of the contractor to
find the approved species.
No plants should be gathered
from the wild in either Hong Kong or China in breach of any national or local
laws.
