A Collection of Environmental Assessment Experience in Airport Core projects (ACP)

Predicted & Existing Operational Noise

Existing Noise Level: Kai Tak Airport (NEF)

The International Civil Aviation Organisation Guidelines stipulate that all land uses within the 30 NEF contour should be acceptable. When the New Airport opens and the Kai Tak Airport closes, about 350,000 people living within the existing 30 NEF contour of the Kai Tak Airport will experience a dramatic improvement in the quality of their living environment.

Predicted Noise Level, New Airport at Chek Lap Kok

Like other major international airports, one of the main environmental issues is aircraft noise. For operational aircraft noise in connection with the Chek Lap Kok (CLK), the EIA produced NEF contours to predict off-site aircraft noise impacts (2 runways and 24-hour operation have been taken into consideration). The environmental planning standard to be adopted for the New Airport is a more stringent 25 NEF so that the Tung Chung new town and other noise sensitive uses on north Lantau, could be planned for better environmental condition. The EIA predicted that there would be several hundred noise sensitive dwellings on North Lantau lying within the 25 NEF contour.
