Examples of Environmentally Friendly Drainage Channel Designs Arising from Environmental Impact Assessments

Yuen Long Bypass Floodway

Title of EIA Yuen Long Bypass Floodway
Completion Date June 1998
EIAO Register Office Reference EIA-004/1998
Project Proponent Territory Development Department
Project Description The project is to construct a bypass floodway for diverting part of the flows entering the Yuen Long Nullah drainage system from the south of Yuen Long into the Kam Tin River in order to reduce the risk of flooding in Yuen Long Town. It involves the following works,

  1. a 3.8km channel extending from the Yuen Long Main Nullah in the south to the Kam Tin River in the North; and
  2. an inflatable dam and a pumping station at the downstream end of the project just prior to connection with the Kam Tin River.

Recommended environmentally friendly design measures of channels

The measures include (Figures 5, 6 and 7),

  1. use of grasscrete lining the sides and base of the channel to provide a habitat for insects and birds;
  2. creation of marschcrete areas to provide a medium for planting grass, reeds, sedges and other freshwater plants and to increase species diversity; and
  3. planting of trees along the channel banks and adjacent to the access roads and footpaths to provide a tree corridor for amenity, wildlife and linkage between various habitats.
