Marine Life in Yan Chau Tong Marine Park
As a result of the rise in sea level about 12,000 years ago, at the end of the last glacial period, the mountains and valleys in the Double Haven area became submerged, forming indented shorelines with headlands and bays. The picturesque Double Haven is also known as “Little Guilin” and “Little Xihu” and according to one saying, “Double Haven is just as beautiful as Suzhou and Hangzhou”. The rocks in the Double Haven area are mainly the younger Late Cretaceous red sedimentary rocks and older Jurassic tuff. Located on the west shore of Double Haven, Lai Chi Wo presents a typical and well preserved Hakka walled village, which is a good place to learn about Hakka culture and traditional Chinese architecture. Yan Chau Tong Marine Park has rich ecological resources, including mangroves, seagrass beds, mudflats and coral communities.
