Regional Collaboration
In order to enhance regional cooperation, Hong Kong and Guangdong set up the Hong Kong-Guangdong Environmental Protection Liaison Group (the Liaison Group) in 1990. The Liaison Group facilitated exchange between the two sides on environmental issues of mutual concern. Both sides also drew up joint action plans to deal with cross-boundary water pollution problems. In 2000, the two governments, following the basis of the former Liaison Group, set up the Hong Kong-Guangdong Joint Working Group on Sustainable Development and Environmental Protection to enhance cooperation in cross-boundary environmental issues, which merged with the Hong Kong-Guangdong Joint Liaison Group on Combating Climate Change to form the Hong Kong-Guangdong Joint Working Group on Environmental Protection and Combating Climate Change (JWGEPCCC) in 2019.
