The Department is committed to environmental protection and adopting green management principles in our activities and operations. The implementation of an Environmental Management System in penal institutions in Hei Ling Region has provided a mechanism for us to operate in an environmentally responsible manner.

We were awarded an ISO 14001: 1996 certificate for the operation of the Environmental Management System in Hei Ling Region on 26 July 2002. This is a third party assurance and recognition via an international standard of our achievement. It recognizes the efforts of our staff and inmates in tackling environmental problems, our compliance with statutory requirements and our commitment to the environment. This is an effective management tool for the Department to achieve continuous improvement in this important area.
