INTRODUCTION

Havening Radcliffe (HR) is committed to improve the environmental performance of routine activities. This is a primary driving force in our business philosophy, which routinely and effectively focuses our attention on the various issues that directly affect our environmental performance and those of others.

REASONS FOR SEEKING ISO 14001 CERTIFICATION

The primary reason for seeking ISO 14001 certification was to understand by first-hand experience what was involved in developing and implementing an Environmental Management System (EMS). We also believed that financial savings could be achieved through the achievement of environmental targets and objectives, together with management 'tools' to measure our performance.

The second reason was to prove to clients that we understood how the standard needed to be interpreted in order to achieve sustainable environmental improvement. We sought to analyse our environmental performance and learn how to minimise the probability of creating pollution and reduce the incidence of wastage of materials, energy and resources.

The third reason is because HR is a respected management systems consultancy practice. We lead from the front, setting a clear example by achieving ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 certification with zero findings.

BENEFITS DERIVED FROM IMPLEMENTING AN ISO 14001 SYSTEM

One of the main benefits from achieving ISO 14001 certification has been the change in attitude by our staff towards the environmental impacts of our services on the community that we serve. We have seen new energy saving initiatives started voluntarily within the office, with a noticeably different approach towards the use of consumable materials, both for ourselves and for our clients.

We have also identified previously unknown areas of wastage and / or hazards, particularly in terms of non-environmentally friendly products and materials such as cleaning agents, plastics, glass, plastic, aluminium, printer / copier cartridges, pest-control sprays etc.

Other fringe benefits to date include recognition by our clients, SAR Government, certification bodies and others, with associated enquiries for assistance from clients in relation to with their own EMS.

In conclusion, we believe that many organisations will respond more positively to EMS developments in the coming months than has been the case with Quality Management Systems over the last few years.
