Ambient Air
The EPD has put in place a regular monitoring programme to measure the levels of PCBs and dioxins/furans in local ambient air at two general urban locations in Hong Kong since mid-1997. Over the years, the programme has extended to cover organochlorine pesticides, Toxaphene, Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid, Perfluorooctane acid, Chlordecone, Hexabromobiphenyl, Polybrominated diphenyl ether, Hexabromocyclododecane, etc. The 24-hour ambient air samples are collected monthly / bi-monthly at the Tsuen Wan and the Central & Western Stations and analyzed by Government Laboratory. The monitoring results provides the annual and seasonal trends of POPs in the atmosphere. In general, the levels of POPs fell at the lower end of the range of ambient air concentrations reported for other urban locations around the world.
