Persistent Organic Pollutants

Reduction of Dioxin/Furan Emissions to the Atmosphere

The 2003 POPs emission inventory revealed that public utilities, community activities and natural causes were the main contributors to the annual atmospheric dioxin/furan emissions. The contribution from local industrial activities was at a relatively low level. The coal fired power plants and crematoria were identified as the two principal classes of local air dioxin/furan emission sources. Efforts are therefore directed at reducing emissions from these two sources as a priority. Proposed measures to reduce emissions of dioxins/furans are being pursued as part of the HKSARG’s environmental portfolio in accordance with the established timetable.
