Influence of Livestock Farms on Watercourses
In Hong Kong, most of the existing livestock farms are located in North and Yuen Long Districts. After years of enforcement and education efforts, all of these farms are now equipped with facilities for treatment and disposal of livestock waste. While proper use of the facilities can enable the livestock waste be treated properly to meet the statutory standards, some irresponsible farm owners/operators may use the facilities for storage of wastewater only and discharge untreated wastewater at his/her convenience. Due to the malpractice of some livestock farm owners/operators as well as other contributing factors, conditions of some watercourses downstream of livestock farms in the North and Yuen Long Districts remain not completely satisfactory.
