Marine dumping is controlled by permits issued under the Dumping At Sea Ordinance (see also Legislation section of Waste Chapter). The material accepted for dumping at sea essentially comprises dredged marine mud. Offenders who carry out marine dumping without a permit or who breach permit conditions face a maximum $200,000 fine and six months' imprisonment on a first conviction, and a maximum $500,000 fine and two years' imprisonment for a second or subsequent conviction.
