Convicted pollution cases in January
A total of 124
convictions were recorded in court in January for breaching
anti-pollution legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection
Department.
Of these cases,
29 were convictions made under the Water Pollution Control
Ordinance, 24 under the Noise Control Ordinance, 39 under
the Air Pollution Control Ordinance, 31 under the Waste Disposal
Ordinance and one under the Ozone Layer Protection Ordinance.
The fines ranged
from $500 to $200,000.
A record fine of
$200,000 was handed down last month on Chevalier (Construction)
Company Limited for violating the Noise Control Ordinance.
The company was
also fined $100,000 for committing another offence under the
same ordinance.
