EPD
meets Greenpeace on clinical waste treatment
In response
to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection
Department (EPD) said today (March 20) that the EPD had held
a meeting with four representatives of Greenpeace this morning
at the Chemical Waste Treatment Centre (CWTC) on Tsing Yi
Island.
EPD officials
attending the meeting were the Assistant Director of Environmental
Protection (Waste Facilities), Mr John Rockey, and the Principal
Environmental Protection Officer (Facilities Planning), Dr
Ellen Chan.
During
the meeting, Greenpeace representatives asked the Government
not to incinerate clinical waste at the CWTC. They also requested
the Government to go for other non-incineration techniques
for handling clinical waste and to do a breast milk study.
The spokesman
said: "Greenpeace agreed with the EPD during the discussion
that waste like body parts had to be incinerated and not microwaved
or autoclaved.
"The
EPD is looking into all possible techniques to handle clinical
waste before putting forward a proposal on clinical waste
treatment to the Environmental Affairs Panel of the Legislative
Council for their consideration."
As for
the breast milk study, the spokesman said the Government was
looking into the possibility of inviting tertiary institutes
to undertake such a study.
