convicted pollution cases in March
A total of 156
convictions were recorded in court in March for breaching
anti-pollution legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection
Department.
Among them, 36
were convictions made under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance,
33 under the Noise Control Ordinance, 32 under the Air Pollution
Control Ordinance, 54 under the Waste Disposal Ordinance and
one under the Dumping at Sea Ordinance.
The fines ranged
from $100 to $150,000.
The heaviest fine
was handed down to Chevalier (Construction) Company Limited
last month for violating the Noise Control Ordinance. The
company was fined a total of $400,000 for committing four
offences under the same ordinance in March, bringing its cumulative
record of convictions to 24 since January 1, 1998.
