New
site awarded to help waste recycling industry
A piece
of land in Chai Wan has been awarded through open tender to
a paper and plastic waste recycler, a spokesman for the Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) said today (May 21).
This
is the second site awarded to the recycling industry this
year and brings the total number of sites let specifically
for waste recycling to five.
The other
four sites include one in Sheung Shui, two at the old Kai
Tak airport and one in Tai Po.
"The
site in Chai Wan is the first site on Hong Kong Island to
be let out to the waste recycling industry," the spokesman
noted.
According
to the Waste Reduction Framework Plan launched by the Government
in November 1998, materials re-use, recovery and recycling
is encouraged to help achieve waste reduction.
"Allocating
land at a concessionary rate to the waste recycling industry
is one of the major measures to help the trade.
"This
arrangement has received positive response from many waste
recyclers.
"As the
site is open to tender for the waste recycling industry only,
this arrangement could reduce their operating cost and help
the industry establish a more favourable business environment,"
the spokesman said.
"The
tenant is required to recycle at least 70 per cent of their
material from local sources.
"This
would help achieve the local waste reduction objective under
the Waste Reduction Framework Plan," he noted.
"The
EPD will continue to work closely with the Lands Department
to identify appropriate short-term tenancy sites to the waste
recycling industry.
"Two
more sites in Yau Tong and Sheung Shui are in the pipeline
for letting to the waste recycling industry in the coming
months," the spokesman added.
