Tenders
invited for supplying and installing particulate traps
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) published in the Government Gazette
today (June 2) a tender notice on the supply and installation
of a device to reduce particulates from the exhaust of diesel
light vehicles.
The Assistant
Director of Environmental Protection, Mr Tse Chin-wan, said:
"It is part of the overall government strategy to reduce air
pollution by assisting owners of pre-Euro diesel light vehicles
to install such a device."
"The
programme aims to retrofit some 42 000 pre-Euro diesel light
vehicles of weight up to four tonnes.
"Our
target is to award the contract in August and start the installation
in September," Mr Tse noted.
The device
must be capable of removing at least 30 per cent of the particulates
in exhaust emissions of diesel light vehicles.
Tenderers
are required to submit all relevant information to prove the
efficacy of their devices.
The EPD
will set up a technical assessment committee comprising independent
experts to evaluate the submissions by tenderers.
"Pre-Euro
diesel vehicles emit about four times more particulates than
vehicles meeting current standards.
"If all
the pre-Euro diesel light vehicles are installed with a suitable
particulate reduction device, particulate emissions from the
whole vehicle fleet would be reduced by six per cent," Mr
Tse said.
"As for
medium and heavy diesel vehicles, we are now conducting a
trial to find the most suitable diesel catalysts for their
installation.
"We intend
to commence a retrofit programme for the medium and heavy
diesel vehicles as soon as suitable diesel catalysts are identified,"
Mr Tse added.
The tender
documents and the detailed information are available from
the Motor Vehicle Emissions Group of the Environmental Protection
Department at Room 4518, 45/F., Revenue Tower, 5 Gloucester
Road, Wan Chai, Hong Kong.
The deadline
for submission of tenders is at noon on June 23, 2000. Enquiries
can be made by phone at 2827 2722 or by fax on 2824 9361.
