Public
submissions on Strategic Sewage Disposal Scheme to close on
June 10
A spokesman
for the Secretariat of the Review Panel on the Strategic Sewage
Disposal Scheme (SSDS) reminds the public today (June 6) that
written submissions on alternative plans to the SSDS should
be sent to the Secretariat by June 10.
"As part
of a consultation process for the SSDS review, the public
is welcome to send their views on and alternatives to the
scheme by post to GPO Box 899 or by e-mail to ssds.review@ssds.gcn.gov.hk.
"The
written submissions, together with the verbal views expressed
during a public hearing on May 28, will be examined by the
International Review Panel on the SSDS," the spokesman said.
The findings
of the examination will be released by the end of this year.
The administration
will consider the recommendations of the review panel and
announce the way forward in the first quarter of 2001.
"The
review panel is formed to examine, based on the experience
of SSDS Stage I works, the environmental, engineering feasibility
and financial aspects of the existing plans for later stages
of the SSDS.
"The
review panel will also examine the views submitted by members
of the public in order to make recommendations on the most
sustainable way forward on the sewage system serving the main
urban areas," the spokesman noted.
The panel
consists of six international and local experts in wastewater
treatment, tunnelling, marine biology and financial analysis.
They
are Professor Qian Yi, Professor Donald Harleman, Professor
Rudolf Wu, Dr Albert Koenig, Professor Sebastiano Pelizza
and Professor Leonard Cheng.
Information
about the review and the SSDS is available from the website
