convicted pollution cases in June
A total of 164
convictions were recorded in June for breaching anti-pollution
legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection Department.
Among them, 55
under the Noise Control Ordinance, 46 under the Waste Disposal
Ordinance, 41 under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance and
22 were convictions made under the Water Pollution Control
Ordinance.
A man was sentenced
to 14 days' imprisonment for illegal disposal of chemical
waste.
The heaviest fine
handed down for violation of environmental laws in the month
was $100,000. A construction company was fined $100,000 twice
during the month for using powered mechanical equipment without
a valid construction noise permit and carrying out prescribed
construction work not in accordance with the conditions of
a construction noise permit.
In addition, the
owner of a cafe was ordered by court to perform 60 hours of
community service for discharging polluting matter into the
Port Shelter Water Control Zone.
