Information
received from CT9 contractor on mud disposal
A spokesman
for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) said the
Container Terminal 9 contractor had submitted information
to the Director of Environmental Protection (DEP) today (September
22) on the disposal of dredged mud in Mainland waters.
On September
19, the DEP requested the contractor to provide information
to show that his dumping operation in Mainland waters was
environmentally acceptable.
"As detailed
information has been submitted by the contractor, the EPD
will need some time to go through it and will form a view
as soon as possible."
If the
information fails to show that the dumping operation is environmentally
acceptable, the DEP would cancel the contractor's existing
permit for loading the mud onto vessels for disposal in Mainland
waters and would not issue any further permits for disposal
outside Hong Kong until such time as he is satisfied that
the dumping operation can go ahead without endangering the
marine environment.
However,
the contractor is still entitled under another permit issued
by the EPD to take the mud to the special pits for contaminated
mud at East Sha Chau in Hong Kong waters where close monitoring
is in place to ensure that no unacceptable impacts are caused
to the environment.
