Lantau
road link EIA report fails to meet requirements
The Director
of Environmental Protection (DEP) decided today (November
13) not to approve for public exhibition the Environmental
Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the Lantau North-South
Road Link between Tai Ho Wan and Mui Wo.
A spokesman
for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD) said the
decision was made because of the substantial environmental
impact the project was likely to bring to the ecologically
valuable Tai Ho Wan, the marshland at Luk Tei Tong and the
woodland at Lin Fa Shan.
The spokesman
said: "The DEP would like to stress that he is not against
projects to improve the transport links between north and
south Lantau.
"His
decision is specifically related to the road alignment proposed
in the report.
"The
EIA report has indicated that there are other available options
which should be given further consideration."
The full
reasons for the decision have been uploaded onto the EIAO
website at http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/eia.
The reasons
are also displayed at the EIAO Register on 27/F., Southorn
Centre, 130 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai.
