Strict
requirements for landfill contractors
In response
to media enquiries, a spokesman for the Environmental Protection
Department (EPD) said today (December 18) that the EPD does
not permit scavenging or similar activities at landfills.
The spokesman
said: "Under the terms of the contracts, the contractors of
the three landfills in Hong Kong are required to prevent scavenging
activities at their landfills.
"All
site workers are required to follow this requirement. EPD
staff would surely stop any scavenging activities when they
spot them."
For goods
confiscated by the Customs and Excise (C&E) Department, there
is a set of procedures agreed between the C&E Department and
the EPD for handling and disposal of such materials at landfills.
Referring
to a media report on a scavenging activity at the Southeast
New Territories Landfill in Tseung Kwan O, the spokesman said
the EPD was conducting an investigation.
"The
EPD will also work together with the landfill contractor and
the C&E Department to improve the current procedures to further
tighten the control and to ensure all site workers will strictly
follow the procedures," the spokesman added.
