EPD
refutes false claims about particulate reduction devices
In response
to a recent media report, the Assistant Director of Environmental
Protection, Mr Tse Chin-wan, said today (January 16) that
it was misleading for the distributor of a particulate reduction
device named "Illinois' to claim in their pamphlets that the
device had been approved by the Environmental Protection Department(EPD).
The EPD
welcomes new models of particulate reduction devices but has
to take a firm stand to protect consumers and the transport
trade against false claims about such devices.
"The
concerned distributor has contacted this department about
this device. We have followed it up and sought more supporting
information about the effectiveness and reliability of the
product. So far we have not received the information needed.
"It is
totally misleading to consumers for the distributor to claim
that the product has been approved by the EPD and in no way
should we tolerate this false claims," Mr Tse said.
The EPD
has issued a warning letter to the company and is seeking
legal advice about the matter. The EPD will also send a letter
shortly to the transport trade reminding it to beware of any
claims that certain particulate reduction devices have been
approved by the EPD.
The EPD
is implementing a voluntary scheme for pre-Euro light diesel
vehicles to be installed with particulate reduction devices.
About 10 000 vehicles have retrofitted with the devices under
the scheme since September 25 last year.
