Work
plan on environmental collaboration signed with Canada
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative
Region (HKSAR) and the Department of Environment of Canada
today (February 16) agreed on the Work Plan 2001 under the
Memorandum of Understanding on Environmental Collaboration
(MOU).
Signing
the Work Plan today were the Secretary for the Environment
and Food of the HKSAR, Mrs Lily Yam, and the Minister for
International Trade of Canada, Mr Pierre S. Pettigrew.
The signing
ceremony was witnessed by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR,
Mr Tung Chee Hwa and the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr Jean
Chretien.
A spokesman
for the EPD said: "Since 1992, there have been fruitful collaborations
benefiting environmental protection work in both Hong Kong
and Canada.
"The
MOU, which outlines common goals and objectives, serves as
a foundation for our collaboration and is an important step
in the evolution of cooperation on the environment between
the two agencies."
The Work
Plan 2001 addresses a number of priority areas in the field
of environmental conservation and protection, including training
on environmental emergency response, promoting environmental
trade and technology, exchanging experience of environmental
conservation and protection, sharing information on air quality
management, exchanging experience of solid waste management,
and promoting environmental education and public awareness.
