Road
show on waste reduction at Tuen Mun Town Plaza
A road
show will be held at Tuen Mun Town Plaza this Sunday (September
30) to encourage the public to prevent and separate waste,
a spokesman for the Environmental Protection Department (EPD)
said.
The road
show is part of the publicity package to enhance public education,
which is one of the seven major initiatives announced recently
to enhance prevention, separation and recycling of domestic
waste.
The spokesman
said: "Although Hong Kong's overall waste recycling rate has
gone up from 32 per cent in 1998 to 34 per cent in 2000, the
recovery rate of domestic waste is relatively low constituting
only eight per cent.
"At present,
more than 6.5 million tonnes of waste is disposed of in landfills
each year.
"Much
greater public awareness of the problem and community participation
in preventing and separating waste are needed to help us better
manage and contain the increasingly serious waste problem
in Hong Kong," the spokesman noted.
Through
displays, talks, game booths, video shows, workshops and quiz
games, visitors will know more about how to prevent, reduce
and separate waste.
There
will also be a prize presentation to winners of an environmental
lantern design competition organised by Tuen Mun Town Plaza
and a property management company.
The road
show will be open between 1 pm and 5 pm on the first floor,
Main Atrium of Tuen Mun Town Plaza. Admission is free.
Similar
road shows have been held in various districts in the past
few weeks.
