Expression
of interest in seeking approval for particulate removal devices
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) today (November 4) started inviting
suppliers of particulate removal devices for pre-Euro diesel light
vehicles to express interest in seeking approval for their products.
The Government
is preparing a set of proposed regulations to be introduced in 2003
to make the installation of an approved particulate removal device
a requirement for all pre-Euro diesel light vehicles.
An EPD spokesman said: "The EPD will require an approved device
to be able to reduce particulate emissions from a pre-Euro diesel
light vehicle by at least 30 per cent.
"This invitation for expression of interest is part of the preparatory
work for the introduction of the regulations."
The Government completed a programme in 2001 to provide financial
assistance to retrofit these vehicles with particulate removal devices.
"About 80 per cent of these vehicles have received the financial
assistance for the installation.
"The retrofit programme is one of the measures announced in the
1999 Policy Address to reduce motor vehicle emissions," the spokesman
noted.
Pre-Euro diesel light vehicles include diesel private cars, light
buses and light goods vehicles of weight up to four tonnes and first
registered on or before March 31, 1995 as well as diesel taxis first
registered on or before December 31, 1995.
The application forms and guidelines are available at the EPD website
at http://www.epd.gov.hk/.
