Drivers
urged to switch off idling engines
The Assistant Director of Environmental Protection, Mr Tse Chin-wan,
today (November 6) urged drivers to turn off idling engines.
Officiating at the Launching Ceremony of a new round of the Territory-wide
"Wait Green - Engine Off" Campaign, Mr Tse said switching off idling
engines could help improve air quality, save fuel and money, and
lengthen the life of vehicles.
"It can also avoid causing nuisance to nearby people and shops,"
he noted.
Jointly organised by the Environmental Protection Department and
the Environmental Campaign Committee (ECC), the campaign kicked
off at the North Point Service Reservoir Playground on Tin Hau Temple
Road.
Together with the President of the Legislative Council, Mrs Rita
Fan; the Chairman of the ECC, Mr Ronnie Wong; and student environmental
protection ambassadors, Mr Tse distributed "Wait Green" labels and
guidelines on switching off idling engines to drivers in Eastern
District after the Launching Ceremony.
Similar distribution activities will be held in other districts
in the coming few months.
Before the distribution started, the three officiating guests and
more than 200 students from kindergartens, primary and secondary
schools in the district decorated a big campaign logo with a diameter
of about five metres. The logo will be used to raise public awareness
about "green" driving practice.
Representatives from a number of vehicle associations attended the
ceremony to show support for the campaign.
