The Environmental Protection Department (EPD) today (September 25) kicked off the Mooncake Containers Recovery Programme to promote green awareness and encourage waste recovery during the festive occasion.
Officiating at the opening ceremony of the recovery programme, the Permanent Secretary for the Environment, Transport and Works (Environment), Mr Keith Kwok, urged the public to make an effort to help reduce waste and protect the environment by handing in mooncake containers after use at the designated collection points.

Collection booths for mooncake containers are set up by the department at 12 popular shopping centres and 27 Towngas outlets. They are open from noon to 7pm on September 25, 26, 29, 30 and October 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10.
A set of coupons will be given to those who hand in a mooncake container to the collection booths. Various concessions including discounts, free dishes, desserts, cakes, etc. will be offered at some 130 designated restaurants and food outlets, two cake shop chains and Towngas outlets upon the presentation of a coupon.
This is the second year the department has organised such a programme under its ongoing partnership programme with the restaurant trade.
About 25,000 mooncake containers were recovered during last year's programme.
This year's programme is co-organised by the Association of Restaurant Managers (ARM), the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades (HKFORT), and the Hong Kong Association of Property Management Companies.
Also officiating at today's opening ceremony at Cityplaza, Tai Koo Shing, were the Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of Hong Kong and China Gas Company, Mr James Kwan, the Chairman of the ARM, Mr Ching Kee, and the Chairman of the HKFORT, Mr Simon Wong.
Details of the programme can be found on the EPD website at www.epd.gov.hk and the Green Restaurant Website at www.greenrestaurant-hk.org. For enquiries, please call the department's Customer Service Centre at 3187 0322.
Apart from this recovery programme, the department also encourages and assists private housing estates to organise mooncake container recovery activities.
A total of 220 private housing estates have signed up to hold such activities for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.
