40 pollution convictions in December 2004
Forty convictions
were recorded last month (December 2004) for breaches of anti-pollution
legislation enforced by the Environmental Protection Department.
Seventeen of the convictions were under the Waste Disposal Ordinance,
14 under the Air Pollution Control Ordinance, seven under the Noise
Control Ordinance and two under the Water Pollution Control Ordinance.
The heaviest fine in December was $50,000.
Three companies were fined $50,000 each for failing to take measures
to control air pollutant emission, using powered mechanical equipment
not in accordance with permit conditions and importing controlled
waste without a permit respectively.
