New measures to facilitate effective management of marine parks and marine reserve

The Government proposes to amend the Marine Parks and Marine Reserves Regulation with a view to facilitating the effective management of marine parks and marine reserve, with effect from October 18.

"The amendments will empower the Director of Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation to control the navigation of glass-bottomed pleasure vessels for coral viewing within marine parks through a permit system," a government spokesman said today (June 7).

"The permit system will help prevent damage to corals in marine parks.  It will be beneficial to the marine environment," he said.

The proposed amendments will also streamline the existing application procedure for collecting marine life and resources in marine parks and marine reserve for educational or scientific studies.

The Marine Parks and Marine Reserves (Amendment) Regulation 2006 will be gazetted this Friday (June 9) and tabled at the Legislative Council on June 14.

Ends/Wednesday, June 7, 2006
