Hong Kong to join C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group

The Government announced today (November 1) that Hong Kong has accepted an invitation to join the C40 Large Cities Climate Leadership Group.

In his letter of acceptance, the Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, said: "Hong Kong has been undertaking measures to promote energy efficiency and the use of cleaner energy sources to help arrest global warming. We will give our best efforts to achieve the goal agreed by APEC economic leaders in September to reduce Hong Kong's energy intensity by at least 25% by 2030, with 2005 as the base year."

Mr Tsang also told the Mayor of London, Mr Ken Livingston, that Hong Kong looked forward to the exchanges and collaboration with other participating cities in C40 to combat climate change.

Earlier this year, Mr Livingston extended an invitation to the Chief Executive for Hong Kong to join C40. Formed in 2005, C40 aims to promote collaboration among cities in the world to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enhance energy efficiency. London, Tokyo, New York, Sydney, Beijing and Shanghai are among the participating cities.
