NENT Landfill Gas Utilisation Project commissioned

The Landfill Gas (LFG) Utilisation Project at the North East New Territories (NENT) Landfill - the largest LFG utilisation project in Hong Kong - was officially opened today (January 25).

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward Yau, said he was pleased with the project which was one of the largest green energy recovery and re-use projects in the world.

He said the project, also one of the largest off-site LFG utilisation schemes in the world, helped cut the use of fossil fuel in town gas production and reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, thus helping to improve the territory’s air quality.

Landfill gas, which contains mainly methane, is a form of alternative energy. In the early stage of the NENT Landfill operation, LFG generated is being utilised only for generating electricity to meet on-site electricity demands, and as a direct heating fuel in the leachate treatment plant of the landfill.

However, the volume of LFG is expected to increase over the remaining life of the landfill, and the quantity of surplus LFG will reach a level that is economically viable for off-site as well as on-site use.

In 2003, the contractor of the NENT Landfill, Far East Landfill Technologies Limited (FELT), and the Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited (Towngas) signed an agreement to build an LFG treatment plant at the NENT Landfill.

Under the agreement, a 19-kilometre pipeline from Ta Kwu Ling to Tai Po was built to transmit the treated surplus LFG to the Towngas plant in Tai Po as an alternative heating fuel for town gas production.

The beneficial uses of LFG as fuel replacement in the Towngas production plant will help conserve a depleting natural resource - fossil fuel - as well as reduce the emission of greenhouse gases, an estimate of up to 135,000 metric tones of carbon dioxide, into the atmosphere.
