High
APIs for Urban and Industrial Areas
The Environmental
Protection Department today (Thursday) recorded Air Pollution
Index values of 121 and 115 for the urban and industrial areas
respectively. The index for new development area was also
high and reached 95.
"The poor
air quality today is caused by nitrogen dioxide and respirable
suspended particulates. The air pollution comes mainly from
motor vehicles, in particular the diesel vehicles in our urban
areas.
"A persisting
low wind condition has caused the pollution to accumulate
over our territory," the Acting Assistant Director of Environmental
Protection, Mr Raymond Leung said.
"The air
quality is improving now as the wind picks up later today.
Our API forecast for the territory tomorrow is 65 for the
urban area, 65 for the industrial area and 60 for the new
development area," he added.
An index
exceeding 100 indicates the air quality is generally unhealthy.
People suffering from asthma, lung or heart illnesses may
be adversely affected, and are advised to minimise physical
exercise, especially energetic or laborious outdoor activities.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 28278541.
