Air
quality improving
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) made a forecast this morning (Wednesday)
that the general and roadside air pollution index (API) values
of today would be 60-75 and 80-110 respectively.
"Because
of the slightly stronger wind from the east and the few showers
this morning, the air quality is improving. However, we might
still expect to have higher level of nitrogen dioxide for
the busy roadsides with heavy traffic and surrounded by many
tall buildings because of their proximity to vehicle emissions,"
the Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Pang Sik-wing,
said.
"The
cloudy weather has also helped to reduce the sunlight intensity
and hence less ozone formation by the photochemical reaction,"
he said.
"It is
not necessary for the general public to take special precautionary
action. However, persons with existing heart or respiratory
illnesses should continue to avoid prolonged stay in areas
with heavy traffic as far as possible. If it is necessary
to stay in these streets or roads, they are advised to reduce
physical exertion as far as possible," Mr Pang added.
EPD will
monitor closely the situation and issue at 4 pm the measured
API for today and the forecast for tomorrow (Thursday).
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/.
