Roadside
API improving
The roadside
Air Pollution Index recorded at Causeway Bay today (Wednesday)
is 101, indicating that the roadside air pollution situation
has improved from the 'very high' levels recorded in the last
few days.
"The
slightly stronger easterly wind prevailed since last evening
and the few showers this morning helped to disperse the air
pollutants. The level of nitrogen dioxide in the busy roadsides
with heavy traffic and surrounded by many tall buildings as
represented by the Causeway Bay Roadside Air Quality Monitoring
Station has been decreased," Principal Environmental Protection
Officer Mr Pang Sik-wing said.
The index
recorded at the Mong Kok Roadside Station, which represented
the air quality at roadsides with less heavy traffic and fewer
tall buildings in the vicinity, was 77.
"The
current pollution level would have little effect on a healthy
person. However, people with existing heart or respiratory
illnesses are advised to avoid prolonged stay in areas with
heavy traffic. If it is necessary to stay in these streets
or roads, they are advised to minimise physical exercise,
especially energetic or laborious outdoor activities," Mr
Pang said.
The general
air quality has also been improved. The APIs for the eight
general air quality stations ranged from 60 to 69.
"With
the east to northeast wind continues to prevail, it is likely
the air quality tomorrow (Thursday) would improve slightly
further", Mr Pang said.
The API
forecast for tomorrow is 55 to 70 for the general air quality
stations and 75 to 90 for the roadside air quality stations.
