More
stringent vehicle emission standard comes into effect
More stringent
emission standards for newly registered light duty vehicles
will come into effect on Thursday (October 1), a spokesman
for the Environmental Protection Department said today (Tuesday).
Under
the Air Pollution Control (Vehicle Design Standards) (Emission)
(Amendment) Regulation 1998, new diesel vehicles of four tonnes
and below will have to meet the latest emission standards
of the European Union.
Principal
Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Mok Wai-chuen, said the
new standard will reduce emission of respirable suspended
particulates by 55 per cent, and nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons
by 38 per cent.
He said
the new standard is part of the Government's motor vehicle
emission control strategy designed to reduce air pollution
caused by vehicle emission.
"It is
the Government's standing policy to adopt the most stringent
practicable emission standards for newly registered vehicles.
The new emission standards are in line with similar tightened
standards introduced recently by the European Union.
"Our
emission standards are now among the most stringent standards
in Asia," he said.
Mr Mok
added that the emission standards of taxis would be considered
separately in conjunction with the proposal to introduce LPG
taxis.
