Very
High Roadside API for the Second Day
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) today (Sunday) again recorded
a "very high" roadside air pollution index (API) of 106 at
the Causeway Bay Roadside Air Quality Station.
At the
Central Roadside Air Quality Station, the API has dropped
from yesterday's 105 to 100 today, marginally falling back
to the "high" band.
"The
high background level of ozone in the region has persisted.
It oxidises the nitric oxide emitted from motor vehicles to
form nitrogen dioxide, which then leads to high air pollution
levels at roadside," the Principal Environmental Protection
Officer, Mr Leung Pak-ming said.
"We advise
persons with existing heart or respiratory illnesses should
reduce physical exertion or better avoid staying at urban
roads with heavy traffic. It is however not necessary for
the general public to take special precautionary action,"
he said.
Other
than at roadside, APIs at the general air monitoring stations
were in the "high" band, ranging from 55 to 69.
The API
forecast for tomorrow (Monday) is 75 to 90 for the roadside,
and 55 to 70 for the general stations.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2837 8541 or from
EPD's website at "http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/".
