Roadside
API stays "very high"
The Environmental
Protection Department forecasted this morning (Monday) that
the roadside Air Pollution Index (API) would again be "very
high" today, the third day in a row, ranging from 70 to 110.
"Persons
with heart or respiratory illnesses should reduce physical
exertion or avoid staying near roads with heavy traffic,"
said Mr Leung Pak-ming, the Principal Environmental Protection
Officer.
"The
air circulation at the Causeway Bay air monitoring station
has remained poor. Nitrogen dioxide would not disperse quickly
enough and may cause the API to reach 110 today," he said.
The conditions
have significantly improved at the Central air monitoring
station, which recorded APIs of 100 and 105 respectively yesterday
and the day before.
"Other
than roadside, the API today for the general stations would
be between 55 to 70," Mr Leung said.
EPD will
issue at 4 pm the measured API for today and the forecast
for tomorrow (Tuesday).
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at "http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/".
