"Very
High" roadside API has continued
The Environmental
Protection Department today (Monday) recorded a roadside Air
Pollution Index (API) reaching 118 at the Causeway Bay air
monitoring station. This was the third day in a row the API
at this station has exceeded 100 and hit the "very high air
pollution" band.
"The
air circulation was poor at the Causeway Bay station. Nitrogen
dioxide did not disperse quickly enough and caused the API
to reach a very high level," the Principal Environmental Protection
Officer, Mr Leung Pak-ming said.
On the
other hand, dispersion at the Central air monitoring station
had been much better. The API recorded there today was 77,
a marked improvement from APIs of 100 and 105 respectively
for yesterday and the day before.
Other
than roadside, the API today for the general stations ranged
from 61 to 74, a slight deterioration from figures yesterday.
"The
API forecast for tomorrow (Tuesday) is 60 to 75 for the general
stations, and 80 to 110 for the roadside. Persons with heart
or respiratory illnesses should reduce physical exertion or
avoid staying near roads with heavy traffic," said Mr Leung.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at "http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/".
