Roadside
API lingers on "very high" level
The Causeway
Bay air monitoring station today (Thursday) recorded a "very
high" roadside Air Pollution Index (API) reaching 102.
"Persons
with heart or respiratory illnesses should reduce physical
exertion or avoid staying near roads with heavy traffic,"
the Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Leung Pak-ming
said.
"The
low wind condition has made nitrogen dioxide difficult to
disperse and caused the air pollution at the roadside of streets
with very busy traffic and surrounded by high-rise buildings
reaching the 'very high' band," he said.
At two
other roadside stations at Mong Kok and Central where the
air dispersion was slightly better, the roadside APIs were
respectively 84 and 95 in the "high" band. For the general
stations, the APIs today ranged from 59 to 72.
The API
forecast for tomorrow (Friday) is 85 to 105 for the roadside
stations, and 80 to 95 for the general stations.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at "http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/".
