EPD
to commission greenhouse gas study
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) today (Monday) signed a $7 million
contract with ERM-Hong Kong Ltd for a study on greenhouse
gas emission control.
The study
will include a survey of various sources of greenhouse gases
in Hong Kong, the development of a model to project the emission
of these gases in future, and the assessment of the implications
of various potential measures controlling the emission of
greenhouse gases.
Principal
Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Pang Sik-wing, said greenhouse
gases were believed to be contributing to climate change,
and many countries were exploring plans to control the emission
of these gases.
"We aim
to try our best to participate in the global effort to prevent
climate change. The result of the study will help us work
out our policy and plans," he said.
Greenhouse
gases include carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons,
perfluorocarbons and sulphur hexafluoride. The common major
sources of these gases include power stations, motor vehicles
and landfills.
The study
will start tomorrow (Tuesday), and is expected to complete
in 12 months before end 1999.
