Low
wind leaving roadside API high
The roadside
air pollution index (API) measured in Causeway Bay and Mong
Kok today (Monday) were 111 and 75 respectively.
The roadside
API for Causeway Bay is forecast to stay in the "very high"
band tomorrow (Tuesday) reaching 120 while the reading for
Mong Kok is expected to be 95.
"The
light wind condition today has resulted in accumulation of
nitrogen dioxide from motor vehicles to a high air pollution
level at busy roadsides as represented by the Causeway Bay
station," Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Raymond
Leung said.
The "very
high" air pollution level would be localised and confined
to busy urban streets with very heavy traffic and surrounded
by high-rise buildings.
The general
air pollution index for today ranged between 56 and 78 and
is forecast to be 70 to 100 tomorrow.
"The
forecast pollution level should have no significant effect
on the general public. However, persons with heart or respiratory
illnesses are advised to avoid prolonged stay in areas with
heavy traffic.
"If it
is necessary to stay in these streets or roads, they are advised
to reduce physical exertion as far as possible," Mr Leung
added.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/.
