High
roadside API forecasted
The Environmental
Protection Department today (Tuesday) forecasted that the
Air Pollution Index (API) tomorrow would reach 90 to 105 for
the roadside stations and 55 to 75 for the general stations.
"High
API is expected as the north-easterly wind ahead of a cold
front approaching Hong Kong is bringing in a higher than usual
background pollution level. We can see that the nitrogen dioxide
levels have started to increase today at our monitoring stations,"
the Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Leung Pak-ming
said.
"When
the roadside API exceeds 100 and reaches the 'very high' band,
people with heart or respiratory illnesses are advised to
reduce physical exertion or avoid staying near roads with
heavy traffic," he said.
Air pollution
today ranged from moderate to high. The APIs at the general
stations fell between 45 to 71, while those for the roadside
stations were between 76 to 89.
Members
of the public can check the API readings on 2827 8541 or from
EPD's website at "http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/".
