Study
to upgrade sewage treatment works
The Environmental
Protection Department is planning to further upgrade the sewage
treatment facility in Sai Kung in order to cope with the anticipated
increase of sewage flow arising from future population growth.
A consultancy
study was commissioned today (Friday) to determine the most
practical and economical way of providing additional treatment
capacity to the Sai Kung Sewage Treatment Works to enable
it to meet service demand up to year 2016.
The $2
million study was awarded to Maunsell Consultants Asia Limited.
It is expected to be completed in 13 months.
The Sai
Kung Sewage Treatment Works was commissioned in 1988 to provide
sewage treatment for Sai Kung area.
The first
phase of the upgrading of the sewage treatment works was completed
in 1996 when facilities were installed to improve the effluent
quality by enhancing nitrogen removal. An ultraviolet light
disinfection system was also installed to replace the chlorination
disinfection system.
In view
of the expected increase of sewage flow and expansion of sewerage
network, the sewage treatment works needs to undergo further
upgrading to cater for this and ensure a continued high level
of protection for this sensitive part of Hong Kong's marine
waters.
