EPD
to stage LPG taxi roadshows
The Environmental
Protection Department (EPD) is to stage a series of roadshows
to tell the public that LPG taxis are clean, safe, comfortable
and practical in Hong Kong.
Entitled
"Clean Fuel, Clean Air", the first show will be held today
(Sunday) at level 2 of Ma On Shan Plaza, Sha Tin between 2.15
pm and 6 pm.
The opening
ceremony will be officiated by Ms Christine Loh, chairperson
of the Environmental Affairs Panel of the Legislative Council,
followed by entertaining performance by pop singers and games
to be played on stage with celebrities.
Through
an exhibition, game booths and video shows, members of the
public will learn how air pollution is threatening health
and how air quality can be improved by replacing diesel taxis
with LPG taxis.
"The
result of the one-year LPG taxi trial is encouraging. LPG
taxis are confirmed to be suitable for operation in Hong Kong,"
EPD's Principal Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Mok Wai-chuen
said.
"If all
diesel vehicles are replaced by LPG taxis, the respirable
suspended particulates in emissions from vehicular source
will be reduced by about 30 per cent," he said.
Mr Mok
said the Government therefore had proposed to introduce LPG
taxis widely.
"One
of the proposed key measures is that all newly registered
taxis are to be powered by LPG by the end of 2000. There are
more details in the consultation paper to be distributed in
the show," he said.
Mr Mok
said visitors' views on LPG taxis would also be collected
during these shows.
Two other
shows will be held at Hong Kong Park and Lok Fu Shopping Mall
on December 19 and 27 respectively.
