Workshop on vehicle emissions opens

Local, regional and overseas experts on vehicle emission control will congregate in Hong Kong next week to share information and experience during a workshop aimed to further improve the control of diesel emission in urban cities.
The two-day workshop on Diesel Vehicle Exhaust Treatment Technology and Motorcycle Emission, jointly organised by the Environmental Protection Department and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, will be held on Monday and Tuesday (January 11 and 12) at the University's Chiang Chen Studio Theatre.

The purpose of the workshop is to update the professionals, practitioners, operators, regulators, academics and people in the trade of diesel vehicles on the state-of-art control technologies and techniques concerning diesel emissions.

Speakers at the workshop will include world experts in diesel emission control; government officers from the State Environmental Protection Admission of China, Hong Kong SAR, Guangzhou and Zhuhai; local academics as well as diesel vehicle fleet operators.

They will review and discuss the development and impacts of diesel emission control technology and measures.

The workshop is sponsored by the Kowloon Motor Bus Company Ltd; the United States - Asia Environmental Partnership; the Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association of United States and Engelhard Asia Pacific INC.

The program of the workshop will be highlighted by a visit to the KMB maintenance depot. The effectiveness of a diesel catalyst on a double-decker bus will be demonstrated in the visit.

The workshop will start at 9 am on Monday. Officiating at the opening ceremony will be President of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Professor Poon Chung-kwong; Deputy Consul General of the US Consulate General, Mr John Medeiros; Deputy Director of Manufacturers of Emission Controls Association, Mr Dale Mckinnon; Regional Sales Manager of Engelhard Asia Pacific INC, Dr Michael Shen; and Deputy Director of Environmental Protection Department, Mr Mike Stokoe.
