General
and roadside API expected to improve tomorrow
The Environmental
Protection Department today (Thursday) recorded a general
Air Pollution Index (API) of 103 at the Kwun Tong air quality
monitoring station.
The roadside stations at Causeway Bay and Central recorded
APIs of 134 and 112 respectively.
Another
roadside station at Mong Kok recorded an API of 83. For other
general stations, the APIs ranged from 68 to 99.
"When
the general API exceeds 100 and reaches the 'very high' band,
people with existing heart or respiratory illnesses should
reduce physical exertion and outdoor activities. They should
also avoid prolonged stay in roads and streets with heavy
traffic when the roadside API exceeds 100," Acting Principal
Environmental Protection Officer, Mr Yeung Mo-man said.
"Nitrogen
dioxide emitted from motor vehicles, particularly from diesel
vehicles, is not dispersing sufficiently under the very still
wind conditions. Air pollution has thus escalated and very
high API readings were measured at some of the roadside and
general stations," he said.
Mr Yeung
said the situation was expected to improve tomorrow (Friday).
Members
of the public can check the API readings for different locations
on 2827 8541 or from EPD's website at http://www.info.gov.hk/epd/.
